Feeding the hungry veg garden

Our vegetable garden is big by anybody’s standard and up to now the only feed it gets has been over winter or at the start of planting when a good dollop of manure has been added. Even then its not been possible to get enough for the whole potager. So last year I started to make feed out of the acres of nettles we have partout (everywhere)

I don’t have a large container but I do have lots of two litre plastic milk bottles. So I simply stuff them with nettle leaves and fill with water. I then dilute the resulting very smelly liquid in my ten litre watering- can. This picture shows the collection I built up at the end of autumn and across early winter before the nettles died back. I now also have a new collection started with this year’s nettles and have begun applying the matured liquid. I’m hoping this will be the answer to my problems with poor bean and pea crops – we shall see.
